Kaizen Bonsai have spent years developing some very unique soil mixes. These help produce bonsai in double quick time. Our soil mixes encourage profuse rooting which in turn produces exceptional top growth.
Today we re-potted a hawthorn collected two years ago. This is a very old tree collected from a dying hedgerow. When we potted it two years ago it only had a teaspoon of root.
The tree was planted in a deep pot in our No1 Bonsai soil mix.

After just two years LOOK AT ALL THOSE ROOTS!

Two years ago this tree had no roots and no branches. A combination of good soil and good fertilizer (Green Dream) have put this ailing tree on the road to becoming bonsai.

Today I had to part company with a very beautiful mugo pine. It’s off to the far side of Europe and I am sad to see him go š

Our large trees are shipped by road to anywhere within the EU.

This one will be on the road for about 6 days.

Labelled up and now all we need is a truck!

We really are a bunch of skip rats!
The old saying goes that one mans muck is another mans money. This rabid pile of dirt looks like junk for sure but, being a little unhinged we were pleased to pay money for it all!
Being privet (ligustrum) we can be 100% confident these will all survive. Privet grows at an alarming rate and these will all be available from our web site next summer…. at very good prices too!

You should see the state of what we discarded!
It took two of us all day but we got it all sorted out and this is the result.

The end of a busy day and another 100 odd trees take a place in the nursery.

It’s been a while since our last movie post. Finding time to do these is getting increasingly difficult. Our latest offering was shot on Christmas day!
I decided to take a look at the subject of refining deadwood since I had received several requests asking how I approached this.
I am not particularly happy with this one. I started with over an hour of footage and so the final result was a little too pared down for my liking.

Bonsai mart began producing paper mail order catalogues way back in the very early nineties. Back then the internet was in its infancy and this is how business was done. We have continued with
this tradition until now.
Producing a catalogue takes about 5 months of work and costs enough to pay someone’s wages for about the same amount of time. Last year (2011) we had to agonize whether to continue, not because of the cost but because things were changing so rapidly. The content of a catalogue has to be finalized by the beginning of August and needs to be current for the better part of the year and in these uncertain times this is just not possible. Prices are rising, suppliers are disappearing and shipping costs and government taxes are rising faster than we can keep pace.
Having spent over 20 years working in the printing industry I love paper and ink and feel that the inexorable move to online retailing, whilst convenient, leaves us a little worse off. After all who doesn’t love browsing a paper whilst having a quiet sit down š
Whilst not producing a catalogue didn’t affect business over the tail end of the year we do hope to get back to this old tradition very soon.
