Norfolk Bonsai Association

Summer Workshop Day

Saturday 11 August 2012 9am-4pm

In “The Workshop”  Wensum Lodge, Norwich NR1 1QW

The committee have decided to host the first of what will hopefully be quarterly teaching/workshop events. The plan is to hold a formal ‘class’ followed by a practical session. We hope this will provide a much more valuable teaching format than the normal open format event. We will be selecting demonstrators with very special skills to present formal class sessions on very specific subjects. This will be followed by a practical session working with members and their trees. Depending upon the materials present we may also be holding open advice sessions. The intention is to cover seasonally relevant subject matter in a forthright and practical manner. There will be two sessions during the day covering different aspects of  bonsai cultivation and development.

The best bit? These sessions will be ABSOLUTELY FREE for N.B.A members. The committee feel that offering this valuable resource helps fulfil the clubs remit to raise awareness of bonsai and offer quality teaching to members. Kaizen Bonsai have agreed to sponsor the events and will be covering room hire fees. We will be inviting participation of non members for a fee of £7.50 for the full day. Members wishing to leave a donation at the end of the day will not be refused!

Refreshments will be available on the day for a small fee. Those attending the full day will need to bring lunch. Food will be available via Wensum Lodge Bar/Café, this may need to be booked in advance.

A lot of work has gone into the preparation of this event and a good day is guaranteed. We hope you will support us by attending for at least one of the sessions and by bringing as many trees with you as possible, this is a bonsai event after all!

A great day in the sun

Over the weekend we had a great days workshop. This group have been working with me for about six years now. Many of these trees have been developed from raw material at our regular monthly get togethers. Find out more about our bonsai workshops.

A Good Days Collecting.

It’s been insanely busy so far this year and everyone was getting a bit ragged so I declared a day off. However instead of loafing around in front of the TV, Rammon and I headed out to the woods. Sadly our collecting is pretty tame compared to what some of our friends enjoy but, we had a nice day out all the same. Here are a few of the trees we collected.

Among others there are larch, hawthorn, beech, yew, scots pine, elm and some very unusual tillia (Linden).

Half a Ton of Bonsai Pots.

We recently acquired a massive haul of very interesting handmade pots. From what we know the pots were all made by Mr Charles Miller who was obviously passionate about his bonsai. The pots seem to have been made from the late nineties through to around 2007. There are a few unique oddities but mostly these are just beautiful pots.

Over the next couple of months the pots will be thoroughly cleaned, photographed and listed on our web site for sale. There is close to half a ton of pots so be patient 🙂

Bonsai in Cyprus

I was recently the guest of some great guys behind the Cyprus Bonsai Forum http://bonsaicyprus.forumotions.com/. We first met last year when everyone visited our nursery for a couple of days. I was very pleased to receive an invitation to visit. Because of pressure on my time I could only manage a short visit this time.

Working with Stavros, Greg and Savvas reminded me of when I started my bonsai journey 20 years ago. So much enthusiasm and so much excitement is great to be around. I felt like being around a bunch of kids, these guys have so much energy…. and so many questions… and so many plants too! That is just what it takes to succeed with bonsai and these guys will go all the way for sure.

I am amazed that bonsai does not seem to have more of a following in Cyprus. However left to my friends here the word is sure to spread and I am VERY pleased to be able to help in a small way.

Thanks for a great weekend guys and for your ongoing support it was a privilege and an honour to be a part of your journey and hope to be back soon.
